Why Choose Off-Road Diesel for Your Savannah Business?
Last month, we discussed how diesel delivery could save your Savannah, Georgia-based business time, effort, and – above all – money. But there could be even more savings in store for you!
If the diesel you’re purchasing is intended for use in any off-road capacity, you can save even more by partnering with Walthall for regular deliveries of off-road diesel. This dyed diesel product is functionally identical to regular ultra-low-sulfur highway diesel but without any requirement to pay the state and federal road and excise taxes that add as much as $0.50 to the price of a gallon of diesel fuel.
This month, we’ll examine how off-road diesel works, how and where it can be legally used, and how much you could be saving by switching to it for your Savannah operations.
What Can Use Off-Road Diesel?
It’s actually easier to explain what can’t use off-road diesel: vehicles that are operated on public streets and highways. If it powers a car or truck that has a license plate on it, meaning that it’s registered for use on public roads, you can’t use off-road diesel in the tank.
For all other diesel engines, off-road diesel is a perfectly acceptable fuel that can save you considerable money with every tank. Off-road diesel can be used in:
- Tractors, harvesters, and other agricultural machinery
- Heavy equipment, including dozers, loaders, excavators, rollers, and any other earthmoving or construction machines
- Marine engines
- Railroad locomotive prime movers
- Installed applications like generators or other diesel-powered plant machines
- Farm or jobsite trucks that are never operated on public roads
What Is Off-Road Diesel?
Off-road diesel is standard ultra-low-sulfur diesel with a small amount of a highly persistent red dye added to it. The dye doesn’t alter the fuel’s chemical properties in any way – it still functions just like regular diesel fuel.
But the addition of that small amount of red dye means that the fuel is no longer subject to highway and excise taxes – a savings of up to fifty cents per gallon. The dye added to the fuel is a permanent indicator that these taxes have not been paid and makes the fuel ineligible for use in highway engines.
How Much Can I Save With Off-Road Diesel?
How much your operation can save by switching to off-road diesel depends on your fleet size and actual fuel consumption. Because the savings are seen on a per-gallon basis, the more fuel you purchase, the more money you’ll save switching to off-road.
To give you a general idea, we’ll show you what off-road diesel will save over a year on just one piece of equipment. For this example, we’ll base consumption on an average-sized piece of earthmoving equipment: a Caterpillar D6-20 dozer. Per the manufacturer, at medium fuel consumption rates, a D6 burns 4.82 gallons per hour.
Over an 8-hour day, that means our D6 is burning 38.56 gallons, and it’s going through 192.8 gallons a week. Multiply that by 48 weeks in a year (accounting for weather, holidays, and other times when the crew isn’t working), and you’re looking at 9,254.4 gallons per year.
At current prices, off-road diesel customers are enjoying savings of about fifty cents per gallon. So, just by switching to off-road, the operation of one Cat D6 could realize savings of more than $4,600 each year.
